Genetic Lifehacks vs. SelfDecode: Which Is Right for You?

Disclosure: I run Genetic Lifehacks, so weigh my opinion accordingly. I've tried to be fair here and to say plainly when the other tool is the better fit.

Which is better? If you want an AI platform with its own DNA kit, an AI health coach, a lab analyzer, polygenic risk scores, and medication (PGx) reports, and you have the budget, SelfDecode offers features I don't. If you already have raw data and want research-referenced explanations of your variants without buying a new kit or storing your genome on someone's server, Genetic Lifehacks costs far less and keeps your file on your device.

First, an important update on SelfDecode pricing

My older comparison listed SelfDecode at a $199 upload plus $9.99/month billed annually. That's no longer accurate. As of October 2026, SelfDecode sells one-time bundles that include its own DNA kit: Essential ($499), Essential+ ($799), Ultimate ($899), and a 40x Whole Genome Ultimate Package ($1,999). Its help center article (updated August 11, 2026) says it does not offer free trials or DNA file upload options, while its upload page still lists compatible providers and says uploaded files don't get all features. If you're wanting to use an existing 23andMe file, contact SelfDecode directly before buying.

What SelfDecode does well

  • Feature breadth. 1,500+ DNA health reports across 35+ topics, an AI health coach, and a Labs Analyzer that interprets blood work.
  • Medication and carrier reports. The Ultimate bundle adds pharmacogenomics for 50+ medications and 40+ carrier status reports. Be sure to check with your doctor before ordering their medications report because not all doctors will take it.
  • Whole genome option. The $1,999 package includes 40x whole genome sequencing and rare variant screening.
  • Data download. It says you can download your raw data and delete your data.

The trade-offs are cost and storage. You're buying an expensive kit, and your genome lives in their system. Their privacy policy allows anonymized, aggregated genetic data to be used for research, product development, and promotional purposes, and individual-level research use with your consent.

What Genetic Lifehacks does well

Genetic Lifehacks works with the data you already have. You get 400+ genotype reports embedded in in-depth, research-referenced articles covering 2,500+ variants, across nutrigenomics, methylation, heart health, detox, inflammation, and longevity. Rather than a score, each article explains the biology, what the studies found, and what you might discuss or try.

  • Much lower cost: $17.99/month, $79.99/year, or $179 lifetime.
  • No new kit required Bring your own data.
  • Privacy: Your raw data file is processed in your browser and stays on your device. It isn't stored on my servers. No ads, no tracking.

Who should choose which

  • Choose SelfDecode if you want pharmacogenomics, carrier screening, lab tracking, an AI coach, or whole genome sequencing, and you're comfortable with a stored-data platform at $499 or more.
  • Choose Genetic Lifehacks if you already have raw data and want to understand it in depth, with the research in front of you, at a lower price and without uploading your genome.

Can I use both?

Yes. SelfDecode says you can download your raw data, and that file is in a format Genetic Lifehacks uses. Some people like SelfDecode's dashboards and lab features and then use my articles to understand the genes behind a result.
